Actualise Learning

ILPs are designed to provide a personalized and student-centered approach to education, allowing students to work towards their goals in a way that is tailored to their unique needs and abilities.

By individualizing the learning experience, ILPs aim to maximize student engagement, growth, and achievement.

Here’s what this could look like in your school:

Here’s an example of an Individualised Learning Plan (ILP) for a middle school student named Sarah, who has been identified as needing additional support in reading comprehension:

Student: Sarah, Year 8 student.

1.Goals:

  • Improve reading comprehension skills.
  • Increase vocabulary knowledge.
  • Enhance critical thinking and analytical skills in reading.

2. Targeted Instructional Strategies:

  • Provide explicit instruction in reading comprehension strategies such as predicting, summarizing, and making connections.
  • Teach vocabulary through context, word roots, and explicit instruction.
  • Use graphic organizers and note-taking strategies to aid comprehension.
  • Implement small-group guided reading sessions to provide targeted instruction and practice.

3.Assessment and Progress Tracking:

  • Use pre-assessment to determine Sarah’s baseline reading comprehension level.
  • Regularly administer formative assessments, such as reading comprehension quizzes or short response tasks, to track progress.
  • Analyse standardized test scores and progress reports to monitor growth over time.

4.Support Services and Interventions:

  • Collaborate with the school’s reading specialist to provide additional reading support and intervention.
  • Schedule regular one-on-one or small-group sessions with the reading specialist to address specific reading comprehension challenges.
  • Utilize technology resources such as audiobooks or text-to-speech software to accommodate learning needs.

5.Individualised Accommodations and Modifications:

  • Provide extended time for reading assignments, tests, and written responses.
  • Offer visual aids, such as graphic organizers or anchor charts, to support comprehension.
  • Break down complex reading materials into smaller, more manageable sections.
  • Provide alternative assessments, such as oral presentations or projects, to showcase comprehension.

6.Collaboration and Communication:

  • Schedule regular meetings between Sarah, her parents/guardians, the reading specialist, and her teachers to discuss progress and make necessary adjustments.
  • Share assessment results, strategies used, and recommendations for support with all stakeholders involved.
  • Maintain open communication channels to address concerns or questions related to Sarah’s ILP.

7.Transition Planning:

  • Prepare Sarah for the transition to 8th grade by discussing strategies for independent reading and ongoing support options.
  • Share the ILP and relevant information with the receiving teachers to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of support.

It’s important to note that this example is a general illustration, and an actual ILP would be more detailed, considering Sarah’s specific needs and the resources available in her school.

The ILP should be regularly reviewed, updated, and adjusted based on Sarah’s progress and changing needs.
