Here’s what a STEAM enrichment learning experience could look like in your school

Activity: Building a Solar-Powered Oven

Objective: To explore solar energy and its practical application while integrating science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

Materials Needed:

  1. Cardboard box
  2. Aluminium foil
  3. Black construction paper
  4. Thermometer
  5. Clear plastic wrap
  6. Tape
  7. Scissors
  8. Ruler
  9. Pencil
  10. Small cooking pots or pans
  11. Small food items (marshmallows, chocolate squares, etc.)

Instructions:

1.Introduction (Science and Engineering):

  • Begin by introducing the concept of solar energy and its benefits.
  • Discuss how sunlight can be harnessed and converted into usable heat energy.
  • Explain the engineering challenge of designing a solar-powered oven.

2.Design and Construction (Engineering and Arts):

  • Divide students into small groups and provide each group with the materials.
  • Instruct them to design and construct a solar-powered oven using the cardboard box as the base structure.
  • Encourage creativity in designing the shape and size of the oven.
  • Students can use aluminium foil to line the inside of the box, maximizing reflectivity.
  • Help them cut a small window on the box’s lid and cover it with clear plastic wrap.
  • Inside the box, line the bottom with black construction paper to absorb heat.

3.Testing and Measurement (Mathematics and Science):

  • Take the students outside on a sunny day and place their ovens in direct sunlight.
  • Have them place a thermometer inside the oven to monitor the temperature.
  • Students can place small cooking pots or pans with food items inside the ovens.
  • Let the ovens sit in the sun for a designated time (e.g., 30 minutes).
  • Afterward, students can measure and record the temperatures inside the ovens.
  • They can also observe and record the changes in the food items.

4.Analysis and Reflection (Science and Mathematics):

  • Bring the students back inside and facilitate a group discussion.
  • Help them analyse the recorded data, comparing the temperature changes in different ovens.
  • Encourage students to discuss why certain ovens performed better than others.
  • Guide them in identifying the factors that affected the effectiveness of their ovens.
  • Discuss the importance of insulation, reflectivity, and maximizing heat absorption.
  • Help students draw conclusions about solar energy and its potential applications.

5.Culinary Celebration (Arts and Engineering):

  • Finally, let the students enjoy the results of their solar-powered ovens.
  • Students can taste the cooked food items (marshmallows, chocolate, etc.) and discuss the flavours and textures.
  • Encourage them to share their experiences and reflections on the activity.

This enrichment activity allows primary school students to engage in hands-on learning, explore the principles of solar energy, and apply their knowledge to a practical and creative project.

It incorporates elements of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics while fostering teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
