This is what a targeted intervention could look like in your school.
Ideas for a series of targeted enrichment learning intervention to support primary school students struggling with their handwriting:
Interactive handwriting games
Develop interactive games that focus on handwriting skills. For example, create a game where students have to trace letters or words using a digital pen or their fingers on a touchscreen device. Include engaging visuals and rewards to make the learning experience enjoyable.
Handwriting obstacle course
Set up a physical obstacle course in the classroom or outdoor area, with stations that require students to complete handwriting tasks. For instance, they could write words on a whiteboard, form letters with playdough, or trace letters on a large chalkboard. This active and hands-on approach can make handwriting practice more dynamic and fun.
Collaborative storytelling
Encourage students to improve their handwriting by engaging in collaborative storytelling activities. Each student takes turns writing a sentence or a paragraph of a story, passing it on to the next student to continue. This exercise not only promotes handwriting skills but also enhances creativity and teamwork.

These opportunities are specifically designed to develop specific learning behaviours and skills that can then be applied to other areas of learning and increase overall engagement and attainment.
Handwriting in art projects
Integrate handwriting practice into art projects. For instance, students can create personalised greeting cards, posters, or banners where they write messages or quotes using different art supplies like coloured markers, watercolours, or collage materials. This approach combines handwriting practice with creativity and self-expression.
Handwriting Challenges and Contests
Organise regular handwriting challenges or contests to motivate students. Set specific goals and provide incentives for improvement. You can have awards for the neatest handwriting, most improved, or the most creative use of letterforms. Display their work prominently in the classroom to showcase their achievements.
Handwriting journal
Provide each student with a handmade booklet ‘journal’ which they can personalise with their artwork and where they can practice their handwriting regularly. Encourage them to write about their day, their thoughts, or their favourite stories. Offer positive feedback and suggestions for improvement in their journals, creating a personal connection and a sense of progress.
Multisensory Activities
Incorporate multisensory activities to engage different learning modalities. For example, students can practice forming letters using textured materials like sandpaper, clay, or textured fabric. They can also practice tracing letters in the air or on their classmates’ backs while focusing on the letter’s shape and movement.
Digital Handwriting Tools
Introduce students to digital handwriting tools, on their iPads, such as digital styluses, that allow them to practice their handwriting on a screen. There are various handwriting apps available that provide instant feedback on letter formation and stroke order. This modern approach can capture students’ interest and provide an interactive learning experience.
These ideas would be developed based on the age and abilities of the students and provide continuous positive reinforcement and support throughout the learning process.
