Here is an example of a series of 1-hour wellbeing enrichment learning experiences delivered to a secondary school with a high proportion of EAL students across the year groups.

Cultural Identity and Belonging
A workshop that celebrates diversity encouraging EAL students to share their cultural backgrounds, traditions, and experiences, promoting mutual understanding and respect among peers.

Language Support and Communication Skills
A workshop that focuses on developing language skills specific to well-being and emotional expression. Provide vocabulary and phrases related to emotions, self-care, and seeking support and engage students in role-plays, discussions, and activities to practice effective communication.

Peer Support and Friendship Building
A workshop that emphasises the importance of positive peer relationships and support networks. Facilitate activities that encourage EAL students to connect with their peers, build friendships, and establish a support system within the school community.

Emotional Regulation and Stress Management
A workshop that teaches EAL students strategies for managing emotions and stress. Introduce techniques like deep breathing, mindfulness exercises, and guided relaxation to help them develop self-regulation skills and cope with challenging situations.

Building Confidence and Self-esteem
A workshop that promotes self-confidence and self-esteem and engages students in activities that highlight their strengths, encourage positive self-talk, and foster a growth mindset. Provide opportunities for them to showcase their skills and accomplishments.

Cultural Exchange and Peer Learning
A workshop that encourages EAL students to share aspects of their culture, language, and traditions with their peers. This promotes mutual learning, cultural appreciation, and a sense of pride in their heritage.

Coping with Change and Transition
A workshop that recognises the challenges EAL students may face when adapting to a new language and culture. This includes strategies for coping with change, managing homesickness, and building resilience during transitions.

Mindfulness and Wellbeing Practices
A workshop introducing mindfulness and well-being practices specifically designed for EAL students. Teach them techniques for grounding, stress reduction, and fostering a positive mindset. Engage them in guided meditations and mindfulness activities that can be incorporated into their daily routines.

Family and Community Engagement
A workshop that involves families and the broader community in well-being activities. A session where parents/guardians can learn about the well-being challenges faced by EAL students and explore ways to support them at home.

A workshop providing information about available support services and resources within the school and local community.

Here’s a personalized example of an English as an Additional Language (EAL) course for a student named Alex, who is a beginner-level English learner:

Course Goals:

1.     Develop basic conversational skills in English.

2.     Build vocabulary and comprehension skills.

3.     Develop reading and writing skills at a beginner level.

Course Outline:

1.     Introduction to English

  • Identifying main ideas, key details, and basic vocabulary.
  • Answering comprehension questions and summarizing information.

6.     Writing Skills

  • Forming simple sentences and basic paragraphs.
  • Writing personal descriptions, short messages, and simple stories.
  • Practicing basic grammar and vocabulary usage in writing.

7.     Cultural Awareness

  • Exploring customs, traditions, and celebrations in English-speaking countries.
  • Learning about cultural norms and etiquette in different contexts.
  • Discussing similarities and differences between cultures.

Throughout the course, regular assessments, quizzes, and activities will be conducted to track progress and provide feedback to Alex.
